Comment by: HKvalhe (85.167.249.9) | At: 12 Jan 2022, 19:20 | File version: 1.0 | Actually, found a SAFE way to use this risky tool. Of course, NEVER put it in WBStartup or User_Startup, but only run it as a Shell command when you find it useful. As an example, L2Cache helps boost some speed for 3D games you play from Warp3D Nova, which is useful, or for video playback. Simply execute the command L2Cache first and then run ONE operation you want to use L2Cache with. When done, go into Shell and type L2Cache OFF, then it's back to normal. Works for me.

I don't recommend anyone to use this tool, no matter what reason. Because in the end, it will corrupt your AmigaOS on SAM, and you'll be forced to do a fresh install, without the tool! So forget all about this tool. It will never be used again!
| | | Comment by: HKvalhe (84.202.230.151) | At: 15 Apr 2020, 16:30 | File version: 1.0 | Regardless of what problems the cache might give, I always have it running on my SAM460ex. I think it helps because performance is at the maximum anyway. I simply wanted to push my SAM460ex to its absolute maximum. It works nicely under AmigaOS 4.1 FE Update 1. Sometimes, a GR message happens, but very little actually. I happy for this little "hack". It's very useful and highly needed.
| | | Comment by: HKvalhe (80.212.47.178) | At: 06 Apr 2015, 19:11 | File version: 1.0 | Have done further testing with L2Cache on SAM460ex under AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition, especially under using Odyssey and TimberWolf. Odyssey was reinstalled for better performance under FE, by deleting History.db and removing font cache. Generally, i have come to the conclusion that even when the L2Cache was used, there was actually very little difference in performance, because i have other stuffs from ACube and my system latest updated that give SAM460 better performance as much as possible everywhere. And if you add a 3D driver, then there will in fact be very little use of the L2Cache at all, especially with the fact that it conflicts with the way OS behaves itself, like during bootup and such. There is a clear reason why this cache is not enabled under AmigaOS 4.1. If the cache boost was made to be fully workable, without causing crashes and checksum errors, then of course this L2Cache would be very useful. As long as it's not really the case, the L2Cache is far too risky to use in it's current state. I do not recommend the use of this tool when it was hoped that the tool could be used more permanently also, like during startup too. This is not the case, and so the tool is therefore not really recommended at all, because of the problems it cause. The idea of it is interesting enough, but practially not quite successful...
| | | Comment by: HKvalhe (80.213.3.116) | At: 09 Dec 2014, 16:13 | File version: 1.0 | I have done more testing with L2Cache enabled and running Odyssey visiting many different sites. Most sites work without problem, but one site being a Norwegian site called Nettavisen.no, causes a GR message and hanging up the system, forcing a reboot. Other than that, the cache enabled works very nice. It's an important performance boost of 35% of SAM460, which certainly has a huge effect! Also tested the cache enabled using TimberWolf, and TimberWolf runs a lot faster and still very stable with this cache enabled than what it's used to. It's quite impressive! Something to bear in mind, i guess ;) Keep up the great work :) ACube rocks ;)
| | | Comment by: HKvalhe (80.213.3.116) | At: 09 Dec 2014, 02:25 | File version: 1.0 | Soirry again. For now i have removed L2Cache from WBStartup and SYS:Utilities, and ONLY placed the l2cache program into SYS:C, to use the command l2cache verbose and OFF when not going to use it, to avoid crashes. Hopefully in the future, it should be possible to have the l2cache enable the whole time without any crash, if there is a good reason to make it run permanently. We'll see. For now i have done it right, i guess. Thanks again for this useful tool :) It's great! :)
| | | Comment by: HKvalhe (80.213.3.116) | At: 09 Dec 2014, 01:30 | File version: 1.0 | Well, it is true that it crashes in some heavy tasks when using it the whole time, but this function has great potential within SAM460ex. Performance is vastly improved with L2 Cache enable, and if there only was a way to use this the whole time, WITHOUT crashing the system, then you have a WINNER with this tool! I hope this can be investigated, and hopefully this tool will be improved to be allowed to run the whole time without crashes.
| | | Comment by: HKvalhe (80.213.3.116) | At: 09 Dec 2014, 00:37 | File version: 1.0 | I agree with Niolator that it would be better to see some kind of a message that tells you the tool is active or not. I did the same way as with the SAM460_Setup. *Placed it in SYS:Utilities *Added the l2cache program to be run from the WBStartup Preference, like done with SAM460_Setup tool. Checked the RageMem function in SysMon, and yes, there is quite a difference to the L2 Cache in SAM460ex. I assume this was correct.

| | | Comment by: HKvalhe (80.213.3.116) | At: 08 Dec 2014, 10:58 | File version: 1.0 | Is there a way to make this cache enable the whole time? A command to set in the User_Startup Sequence? Run >NIL: l2cache verbose or something like that? This tool is very useful to gain extra speed. I hope this becomes more of a standard in AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition, to boost the performance of SAM460. Great tool! :) Thanks :)
